The Finals

No, this is not the PBA Finals, though it'll start this coming Friday...this is the Final Showdown of 5 chefs who are all trying to win the Grand Prize and be recognized as the Best among the Best. I got to shoot this last week and when you're inside the kitchen with the chefs, you could really feel the intensity, the pressure and the passion to create the most delectable, eye-catching and perfect dish that will get them the judges' favor. Here are a few moments from The Finals.... Some of the entries by the Chefs.... The Judges at work themselves.....I was inside the judging room and I heard and saw how they had a difficult time in considering every detail per dish and it took them a while indeed to choose the first, second and third place winners.... Another round of applause for the 5 Chefs who competed....[clap, clap, clap] The whole Batch....

It was my first time to go to Clark and enjoy the festival. Even though we got there by almost noon time, I would say the trip was still worth it. Next year, we'll try to join the photo contest so we can have access to a nearer viewpoint in shooting the hot air balloons. But for now, I will be contented with these images.... Sky high..... Another Executive Portrait Session

I am beginning to enjoy taking images of Executives because of the challenge in directing them, creating good poses for them, and leading them to feel good at the same time. I felt the adrenalin rush in setting up the lights and even rushing my lunch just to finish the shoot because you can't make these people wait and I hope they'll be delighted with their photographs as much as I did.

Last Friday, the best way to enter the weekend is to have a photo shoot with my girls.....I also wanted to try a new strobe and softbox I bought last week. Last December 20, 2007, my wife had her ultrasound and found out that we'll be having a BABY BOY!!!! This is the best Christmas and New Year's gift I have ever received.....after 3 lovely daughters, we have been blessed with an UNICO HIJO...the only grandson on the side of my in-laws [they have 9 grand daughters, mind you]....and the only one to carry the Pilapil name on the side of my Mom.... He already has a name----that's how excited the girls and I became---it's Patrick David Silang Pilapil! Yahooooo!! What more can I ask?

A December Wedding

Five days before Christmas, I still had a chance to shoot a wedding held at Lipa, Batangas [a southern province in Luzon, Philippines] which was a two hour drive from the Metropolis... The preparation and reception was held in a farm within the city surrounded with trees and a great deal of sheep, doves, goats, etc. We were there at 5:30am and it was pretty cold and just in time to get some good sunrise shots. The bride travelled all the way from London to get married in a special time of the year! The wedding took place in a huge cathedral and I marvelled at the architecture of the church. I had a great time shooting for almost 9 hours and it was worth it! I love shooting morning weddings due to the available light and the cool air specially in a place and season as this. For the past two weeks I had the chance to mingle with this cute little girl from California. She loves biting, pinching my arm and laughs at me whenever I would ask chocolates from her. My wife gave me a surprise gift I never imagined she could pull off!! Yesterday she was in a taping at our house with Chef Rob for CHEFS TO GO of QTV 11 [Sundays @ 7pm] as she was their featured guest. They have a new season and decided to feature her with Chef Rob cooking a couple of recipe dishes---which were my favorites---Salpicao and Baked Ziti!! To my surprise when I went home, the whole crew had me stunned as they said Portia and I will enjoy a sumptuous dinner IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA [which left me sweating all over!!] and I thought that was all. After a few minutes, Francine Prieto came in and sang a birthday song with a cake at hand and asked me to blow the candle and make a wish. I was left speechless and so was Portia as she was also surprised after knowing from Chef Rob that they have some ANNIVERSARY gifts for us [as it'll be our 11th Wedding Anniversary on Oct. 12] and that the whole episode was designed not only to surprise me but her as well!! Sad to say, I wasn't able to get my camera upstairs to have a photo with Chef Rob and Francine along with my family. But I had a great dinner [amidst the lights and cameras] and expressed my gratitude to Portia, Chef Rob and the rest of the production team. What more can I say?

In food photography, I get a kick whenever I see the final output as a result of not one, two or just three individuals. But as I said in my previous posts, it's a collaboration of the chef, food stylist, prop stylist, photographer, lighting director and so on. The image above is a product of a great work among the different professionals I mentioned and I feel privileged to be the food photographer in the group!! [what else is new?] So much so that I'm getting interested in taking up a culinary class myself!! [whooohooo] Anyways, will try to further update this blog with more food shots.... Cheers!!

MEETING A MASTER OF PHOTOGRAPHY

The other day, I got the privilege to meet Ed Bayani, a veteran and master of Photography. His specialty back in his time was rendering special effects in the darkroom where Photoshop and editing softwares were yet remote and even unheard of. Listening to his stories as to how he shot print ads for FORD Philippines, Johnson and Johnson, etc. left me astounded and amazed at his discipline and ability to explore avenues where no other photographer during his time would take...As one fellow photographer told him, "You really like to break the rules..." Indeed, despite the digital age and being retired, he has not settled to sit down and let his artistic side fade away. Today, he is into another form of art, which I will describe and define in another post. I knew I spent that morning productively with Mr. Bayani. In fact, he even agreed to help me out in my future shoots....a blessing not everyone gets to enjoy!!

SLOW BRO, NOT SMART!!

I've been subscribed to SMART BRO since Sept. 2006 and I have never experienced the 384kbps speed they claim in their ads!!! I use this dsl service for uploading and downloading files and the MAXIMUM SPEED I GET IS A PATHETIC 45KBPS!!! I called their technical service and got no concrete action on my complaint and I'm about to end my contract with them [12 AGONIZING MONTHS] this Aug. 2007 and can't wait to switch to DESTINY which can download files in 1.2MBPS at their lean hours!! THIS SLOW BRO IS MISLEADING THE PUBLIC IN THEIR CLAIM OF A 384KBPS RATE!! LET'S ALL SWITCH TO ZIPIDEE OR DESTINY, TO TEACH THIS GUYS A LESSON!! DON'T BELIEVE THEIR ADS, OR YOU'LL REGRET FALLING INTO THEIR TRAP!!

God Saved My D200

Finally, I decided to bring to Columbia Digital my D200 after 2 attempts to let MAYER PHOTO fix or at least determine what's causing the DBS [Dead Battery Syndrome as coined @ Nikonians.org]. MAYER said he charged the capacitor and then replaced the switch but I didn't get a single piece of what was replaced!! I knew the guy was just beating around the bush and I knew I was wasting precious time. I met Ms. Malu De Guzman, Vice President of Marketing of Columbia Digital and I was told that MAYER sold me a GREY MARKET unit!!! I was stunned as she narrated the gift check, discount service card, Nikon bag and so on that I should have received. Thus, I can call myself a victim of such modus operandi of MAYER who pretends to act as a NIKON dealer when in reality, he sells grey market items...or worse, FAKE items such as my D200 battery, which Columbia FINALLY DETERMINED as THE CULPRIT to the unit's DBS!! THANK GOD nothing was damaged in my D200, the Lord is good! MORAL OF THE STORY: CHECK THE ITEM'S SERIAL NUMBER IN MY NEXT PURCHASE AND DEFINITELY CEASE FROM PURCHASING FROM MAYER! To all who would read this, SPREAD THIS EXPERIENCE OF MINE AND AVOID BEING IN HIS LIST OF FOOLED BUYERS!! Columbia is also planning some legal actions against Mayer and I definitely volunteered to give my written statement and testify should the need arises. God saved my D200!! Yahoo!!!

I was in the above restaurant last Thursday as I was invited to assist for a veteran photographer, Dojo Palines--a former President of the Advertising Photographers Association. He is also the mentor of Xander Angeles--a noted fashion photographer in Philippine's Next Top Model. It was a pleasure to see a MASTER @ work!! He shot these images using a 5 light set up: 3 norman 2400 heads, 1200 power pack and elinchrom 400bx heads all in grids!!! Funny cause there was another shoot going on at the other side of the resto and it was a fashion shoot, only to see the other photographer using one VISIO monolight!! And we were shooting food with 5 lights!!! :=) Thanks Doj for these images...

"Hell Week"

I was asked by Chef Dino to drop by his office yesterday morning and had fun shooting the "real life" inside a culinary academy's kitchen! Though I had the chance to shoot inside a kitchen with some restaurant clients of mine, but what I witnessed yesterday was no way in comparison to how they described it---"Hell Week"! A group of chefs were in a whirl chopping, boiling, frying, styling, in order to feed a couple of incoming students and receive constructive remarks later. Of course, the best part was having a share in the meal!! :=) And what great food I had....here are some images: Prep shots... Show time!!! Chef Dino facilitating the session... The best part....

Classic furniture...

Two weeks ago I got to shoot for a client their furniture line and they were so classic and expensive. I even got to see one of the chairs in the recent Bond movie! That's how stylish it is! Four days and one big tent was needed to shoot more than 50 pieces of this collection.... BG, thanks for this catalog file....can't wait to see the rest... Yesterday I had a great time shooting this guy!! The wackiest wedding couple for the year!! This is how I would describe these two...Admirable disposition on a wedding day! I had a good time shooting despite being in the hotel @ 5:30am!! Last Saturday, I got to shoot their wedding....starting from the hotel at 10am till the reception at around 8pm!! 10 hours of none stop shooting!!!! 10 hours of fun!!! (",) The longest [in terms of time] wedding shoot I've had in 6 years... Great crowd, familiar faces and not to mention the joy and cheer that filled the event!! Here are some of the images from their wedding.....definitely more to come!! :-) "My turn to take the shot..." Who says photography isn't for kids? LOL!! A song number the couple loved... Great church!! "Wear this ring as a sign of my love..." Photogenic Bride!! Walking down the aisle....all smiles, of course! "We believe we can fly.... we believe we can touch the sky..." Gorgeous bride.... That's my man... This will definitely go into my Portfolio!! =-) Great flowers, Sunday....
